E-Health 2.0: from mechatronic 3D printing of functional materials to digital human modeling

Mehdi Ammi is Professor at the University of Paris 8. He is engineer in electronics (2000), PhD in robotics (2005) and habilitaded to supervise research (HDR) in computer science since 2013. His research focuses on the study of pervasive environments and their societal and industrial applications (e-health, smart building, factory of the future, etc.). He addresses this field with a multidisciplinary approach combining artificial intelligence (machine learning, neurosciences, etc.), mechatronic technologies (organic electronics, smart textiles, etc.) and human factors (psychology, behavioral analysis, etc.). Mehdi Ammi was the leader or coleader of several international working groups (IEEE TCH, EuroVR Haptic SIG, etc.), and was involved in more than 20 national & international projects and industrial collaborations.

Abstract:

Pervasive and ubiquitous environments represent a major key turning point in the process of transformation of our society. In the particular field of health, these environments could offer credible solutions to the many challenges that our society will face in the coming decades: population increase and aging, monitoring of chronic diseases, increasing sedentary lifestyle, obesity / diabetes, etc.

If recent technological developments make it possible to give substance to these new environments, there remain a certain number of scientific challenges to be resolved in order to make this transformation credible, efficient and acceptable to society (adapted mechatronics, robust data processing, ethics, ergonomics and usability, etc.). With this in mind, I adopted an interdisciplinary research and innovation approach aimed at developing e-health solutions based on the needs of users (patients, doctors, etc.) and gradually going back to technological components, then to their integrations and field experiments. My research has thus led me to work on various but extremely complementary subjects such as mechatronic 3D printing of functional materials, neurosciences and even data sciences.

The purpose of this talk is to present this interdisciplinary approach to you in the context of three topical medical applications: monitoring and rehabilitation of post-stroke patients, therapeutic education of diabetic patients, social support for patients. Through this presentation, I will highlight a number of scientific and technological advances compared to the state of the art, but also key issues that remain to be studied.
